LONDON (Reuters) - Two new prisons are to be built to help ease overcrowding after watchdogs warned that the system is in crisis and could get worse.

Home Secretary John Reid announced plans on Friday for jails on Merseyside and in Woolwich, south London, to provide an extra 1,300 spaces.

The prison population has reached 80,000, the highest per capita in Western Europe, and the government wants to add room for at least another 8,000 inmates.
