Every police force in the UK is now involved in the investigation into the alleged plot to blow up transatlantic airliners, it has emerged.

The 43 forces in England and Wales, eight in Scotland and the Police Service of Northern Ireland have sent, or are sending, officers to assist.

Hundreds are said to be involved with further officers on patrol at airports.

Meanwhile, searches of woodland at High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire and 14 addresses are continuing.

Police sources have confirmed the inquiry has moved into another area, with a property in Northolt, north-west London, now among those being searched.

The Metropolitan Police, which is leading the inquiry, has said it has already completed searches of 36 business and residential sites.

A total of 20 vehicles have also been searched as part of the investigation.

ARRESTS OVER 'BOMB PLOT'
10 August: 24 people arrested in London, High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, and Birmingham
11 August: One released by police without charge
15 August: Another person arrested in Thames Valley area
16 August: Police given extra time to question suspects; one person held in Thames Valley area released without charge
21 August: Police have until this date to question two of the suspects arrested on 10 August
23 August: Police have until this date to question 21 of the suspects arrested on 10 August

A spokeswoman for the Association of Chief Police Officers said: "It's routine in a big investigation that ACPO coordinates mutual aid for forces.

"All forces across the UK are providing officers to help with the operation by the Metropolitan Police."

BBC home affairs correspondent Danny Shaw said the precise number of officers involved in the inquiry has not been disclosed for operational reasons.

Most of the officers dispatched are detectives, but police specialising in searches and scene of crime examination are also taking part in the investigation, he said.

The alert began on 10 August after raids in London, High Wycombe and Birmingham.

A district judge has granted anti-terror officers an extra seven days to question 21 of the 23 suspects being held, and an extra five days to question two.

Under the 2006 Terrorism Act the maximum period someone suspected of terrorist activity can be held without charge is 28 days, subject to regular court approval.

It is believed up to 17 people are being held in Pakistan over the alleged plot - with two British nationals of Pakistani descent among them.

Scotland Yard officers have also flown to Pakistan to liaise with the authorities there over the questioning of Rashid Rauf, the only man who has so far been named by Pakistani authorities.

[The Herald] Rumpole author claims UK is selling out to fascism

Rumpole author claims UK is selling out to fascism
PHIL MILLER, Arts Correspondent
August 17 2006

Britain is in danger of "selling out to fascism" in the way it is dealing with the threat of terrorism, according to John Mortimer, the QC and popular author.
Speaking at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, which is sponsored by The Herald and Sunday Herald, the creator of the Rumpole of the Bailey series of books criticised the government's response to terrorism.

Mortimer said his next book was to be called Rumpole and the Reign of Terror and would feature Rumpole defending a suspect, a hospital doctor accused of being a terrorist.

"The book's about terrorists, but it's not really about terrorists – it's about this wonderful government, who have given away all our civil liberties," he said.
"They've cancelled the Magna Carta, they've stopped trial by juries, and removed the presumption of innocence just because the terrorists are around, which is a certain way of changing our life – which is what the terrorists want to do.
"One of the things that Rumpole inveighs against is that his client does not know the charges against him.

"The changes have put us back way before 1215 AD, Mr Blair has removed us back to the Dark Ages. God knows who advises him on legal matters: although he is very near to God apparently."

He also disapproved of the use of "summary justice" he felt was part of the government's legal policy.

"If you get the policemen being judge and jury then you've really sold out to fascism," Mortimer added.

Earlier in the day, the lauded Irish writer John Banville, who won last year's Booker Prize for The Sea, at an event in the festival's main RBS Theatre.
Asked by a member of the audience who he thought would win this year's Booker Prize, the long list of which was revealed this week, he admitted he had not read any of the books on it.

He said winning the £50,000 prize was often down to chance. "It's a lottery, and someone on the day will just say: 'Oh, just give it to him.' Which is exactly what happened last year."

[The Progressive] Bush Contemplates Rebirth of Dictatorship for Iraq

Bush Contemplates Rebirth of Dictatorship for Iraq
By Matthew Rothschild
August 17, 2006

There was a big clue planted at the bottom of the very long lead article in The New York Times of August 17.

That story noted the alarming rise in insurgent attacks against American and Iraqi forces.

The number of IEDs in July was 2,625, just about twice what it was back in January, when Zarqawi was still prowling around.

Clearly, his death did nothing to slow the pace down or snuff out the insurgency.

The shelf life of Bush propaganda is only about one week these days.

But back to the clue.

The last three paragraphs of this story revealed that “senior administration officials . . . are considering alternatives other than democracy,” according to a military expert who was just briefed at the White House.

Hmmm, “alternatives other than democracy.”

My, what can those be?

Monarchy? Dictatorship?

In that same edition, The New York Times ran a headline about the death of the brutal Paraguayan strongman Alfredo Stroessner, proclaiming him to be a “colorful dictator.”

That’s an obscenity. According to Amnesty International, “During Stroessner's military dictatorship, gross and systematic violations of human rights occurred. Amnesty International repeatedly expressed concern to the Paraguayan Government about long-term prisoners of conscience and allegations of torture, ‘disappearance’ and death in custody of political prisoners, as well as reports of prolonged detentions of political opponents.”

(For a glimpse at the horrors he committed, go to http://www.amnestyusa.org.)

The Bush Administration may be looking for an Iraqi Stroessner, or another, more reliable Saddam.

That may have been what Cheney and Rumsfeld had in mind all along. From the very beginning, they wanted to install in power Ahmad Chalabi and his groups of exiles roosting in the Iraqi National Congress, writes George Packer in his book The Assassin’s Gate. When the situation in Iraq began to deteriorate, Cheney blamed those in the Administration who refused to go along with this plan.

“In the fall of 2003, Dick Cheney approached his colleague Colin Powell, stuck a finger in his chest, and said, ‘If you hadn’t opposed the INC and Chalabi, we wouldn’t be in this mess,’ ” Packer reports.

Maybe Chalabi is waiting in the wings still—or some other Saddam wannabe.

Bush appears to be taking applications.

[New york times] Agency Approves First Use of Viruses as a Food Additive

Agency Approves First Use of Viruses as a Food Additive

Published: August 19, 2006

WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 (AP) — A mix of bacteria-killing viruses may be sprayed on cold cuts, wieners and sausages to combat common microbes that kill hundreds of people a year, federal health officials ruled Friday.

The ruling, by the Food and Drug Administration, is the first approval of viruses as a food additive, said Andrew Zajac of the Office of Food Additive Safety at the agency.

Treatments that use bacteriophages to attack harmful bacteria have been a part of folk medicine for hundreds of years in India and for decades in the former Soviet Union.

The approved mix of six viruses is intended to be sprayed onto ready-to-eat meat and poultry products, including sliced ham and turkey, said John Vazzana, the president and chief executive of Intralytix, which developed the additive.

The viruses, called bacteriophages, are meant to kill strains of the Listeria monocytogenes bacterium, the food agency said.

The bacterium can cause a serious infection called listeriosis, primarily in pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems. In the United States, an estimated 2,500 people become seriously ill with listeriosis each year, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of those, 500 die.

Luncheon meats are particularly vulnerable to Listeria because after they are bought they are typically not cooked or reheated, which can kill harmful bacteria like Listeria, Mr. Zajac said.

The preparation of bacteriophages — the name is from the Greek for “bacteria eater” — attacks only strains of the Listeria bacterium and not human or plant cells, the food agency said.

“As long as it used in accordance with the regulations, we have concluded it’s safe,” Mr. Zajac said.

People normally come into contact with bacteriophages through food, water and the environment, and they are found in our digestive tracts, the agency said.

Consumers will not be aware which meat and poultry products have been treated with the spray, Mr. Zajac said. The Department of Agriculture will regulate the actual use of the product.

The viruses are grown in a preparation of the very bacteria they kill, and then purified. The food agency had concerns that the virus preparation could contain toxic residues from the bacteria, but testing did not reveal residues, which in small quantities are not likely to cause health problems anyway, the agency said.

“The F.D.A. is applying one of the toughest food-safety standards which they have to find this is safe,” said Caroline Smith DeWaal, director of food safety for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer advocacy group. “They couldn’t approve this product if they had questions about its safety.”

Intralytix, based in Baltimore, first petitioned the food agency in 2002 to allow the viruses to be used as an additive. It has since licensed the product to a multinational company, which intends to market it worldwide, Mr. Vazzana said.

[Reuters] Powergen hikes bills again

Powergen hikes bills again
Thu Aug 17, 2006 11:26 AM BST
Source:  London Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) - Powergen, the country's second-biggest energy supplier, said on Thursday it was raising domestic gas bills by 18.4 percent and electricity charges by 9.7 percent in response to soaring wholesale costs.

The price changes, which take effect from August 21, will add almost 130 pounds to the annual bill of typical customers taking both electricity and gas, Powergen said.

It is the second time this year that Powergen, which is owned by German utility E.ON, has hiked its prices.

Powergen last raised them in March, when gas charges were jacked up by a record 24.4 percent and power bills surged by 18.4 percent.

The company said around 10 percent of its customers who are on capped or fixed price deals would not be affected.

Tight gas supplies, as ageing North Sea fields pump out less and less have helped lift wholesale gas prices to record levels and utilities have upped bills to protect their profits.

A major shutdown at the giant Rough gas storage facility in the North Sea has exacerbated the situation.

UK utilities have to buy gas wholesale for re-selling to households and businesses, whose bills have rocketed over the last two years.

The average annual home energy bill now exceeds 1,000 pounds.

"We take today's announcement very seriously and have fully considered its impact on our customers," Nick Horler, Managing Director of Powergen Retail said in a statement.

British Gas owner Centrica, EDF Energy, Scottish Power, Scottish & Southern and npower have all hiked their gas and power prices twice this year, blaming soaring wholesale costs.

[Associated Press] Federal judge orders end to wiretap program

Federal judge orders end to wiretap program

Says warrantless domestic surveillance program is unconstitutional

BREAKING NEWS
Updated: 12:37 p.m. ET Aug. 17, 2006

DETROIT - A federal judge ruled Thursday that the government's warrantless wiretapping program is unconstitutional and ordered an immediate halt to it.

U.S. District Judge Anna Diggs Taylor in Detroit became the first judge to strike down the National Security Agency's program, which she says violates the rights to free speech and privacy.

“Plaintiffs have prevailed, and the public interest is clear, in this matter. It is the upholding of our Constitution,” Taylor wrote in her 43-page opinion.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit on behalf of journalists, scholars and lawyers who say the program has made it difficult for them to do their jobs.

The government argued that the program is well within the president's authority, but said proving that would require revealing state secrets.

The ACLU said the state-secrets argument was irrelevant because the Bush administration already had publicly revealed enough information about the program for Taylor to rule.

This breaking news story will be updated.

[BBC News] Lebanese army crosses key river

Lebanese army crosses key river
Lebanese army troops
Lebanese troops have not controlled the south since the 1960s
Lebanese troops have crossed the strategically important Litani river, moving into some areas of southern Lebanon for the first time in decades.

France has confirmed it is ready to head an expanded international force working alongside the Lebanese army.

But France and other UN contributors want their roles clearly defined, including any disarming of Hezbollah.

Israel, meanwhile, says it has passed control of half of its positions in the south to the current UN force there.

Dozens of Lebanese army trucks, armoured personnel carriers and jeeps crossed the Litani using temporary bridges set up to bypass bridges damaged by Israeli shelling.

The vanguard crossed at 0600 local time (0300 GMT), to be greeted by residents cheering and waving.

About 2,000 Lebanese troops are in the initial deployment, which will rise to the 15,000-strong force approved on Wednesday by the Lebanese cabinet, which includes two Hezbollah members.

Disarmament dilemma

Senior Hezbollah and other Lebanese figures have made it clear there is no question of the army disarming Hezbollah fighters.

Map of Lebanon

Italy's foreign minister also said Italian troops, preparing to join the international force, were not expecting to be involved in disarming the group.

Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora has said that no weapons will be allowed outside the authority of the Lebanese state.

But the BBC's Jon Leyne says there seems to be a tacit agreement for the fighters to hide their weapons and go underground.

The disarmament question is sure to be high on the agenda of a UN troop contributors' meeting to be held in New York later on Thursday.

Handover

As the Israeli pullout continues, an Israeli military spokeswoman said the town of Marjayoun and its surrounding area were now in the hands of troops from Unifil, the 2,000-strong existing UN force.

The spokeswoman said the handover would continue gradually but it was too early to say how soon Israeli troops would be able to pull out of Lebanon entirely.

Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said: "If it takes time until the international forces are organised, it takes time until Israel withdraws. This is the equation."

French Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie has confirmed that France is ready to lead an expanded UN force in Lebanon but only with a clear mandate and sufficient resources.

France's Le Monde newspaper said on Thursday that Ms Alliot-Marie was planning to send only a small, symbolic French force and that UN officials were trying to persuade her to send a far greater contingent.

The expanded UN force's commander, Gen Alain Pellegrini, said he expected the first elements to start arriving early next week.

"This Unifil will be very different from the previous one. The old Unifil is dead," he told AFP news agency.

Hard road home

Israeli aircraft have been dropping leaflets warning refugees to stay away from southern Lebanon.

Despite these warnings, there has been a steady stream of displaced people heading home.

The UN says around a quarter of a million have already returned but hundreds of thousands are still believed to be on the move.

They face a tough journey with traffic jams and the threat of unexploded bombs, the BBC's Greg Morsbach reports.

The UN found 200 cluster bombs near a hospital, in the village of Tebnin.

Many of those who managed to escape days of heavy bombardment are now faced with rebuilding their villages and Hezbollah is offering assistance, our correspondent notes.

In another sign of a return to normality, a commercial flight from Amman in Jordan arrived at Beirut airport on Thursday - the first since Israel bombed the runway on 13 July.

[Reuters] One released over alleged bomb plot

One released over alleged bomb plot

Source: Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) - Detectives probing an alleged plot to bomb trans-atlantic airliners have released without charge one person they had arrested, police said on Thursday.

But a court has granted them further time to question 23 suspects -- 21 for another week, two for another five days.

Explaining the release, police said in a statement "In all operations, some people may be released without charge while others may remain in custody for further investigation.

"This is not unusual and is to be expected in large and complex criminal enquiries where a number of arrests have taken place."

Detectives had to apply to extend the detention warrants for the 23 suspects arrested since police said they had foiled a plan to carry out suicide bombings on planes bound for the United States using liquid explosives disguised as drinks.

The 23 people are all British-born Muslims, mainly of Pakistani descent. Police can hold suspects for up to 28 days before either charging or releasing them.

The alleged plot by suspected Islamist militants, if followed through, could have surpassed the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States in fatalities.

[Independent] Blair's 'frenzied law making' : a new offence for every day spent in office

Blair's 'frenzied law making' : a new offence for every day spent in office

By Nigel Morris, Home Affairs Correspondent
Published: 16 August 2006

Tony Blair's government has created more than 3,000 new criminal offences during its nine-year tenure, one for almost every day it has been in power.

The astonishing tally brought accusations last night of a "frenzied approach to law-making" that contrasts with falling detection rates and climbing levels of violent crime.

The figures emerged as police chiefs disclosed they were considering asking ministers for a set of new measures to allow them to impose "instant justice" for antisocial behaviour.

The 3,000-plus offences have been driven on to the statute book by an administration that has faced repeated charges of meddling in the everyday lives of citizens, from restricting freedom of speech to planning to issue identity cards to all adults.

In total, the Government has brought in 3,023 offences since May 1997. They comprise 1,169 introduced by primary legislation - debated in Parliament - and 1,854 by secondary legislation such as statutory instruments and orders in council.

Remarkably, Labour is creating offences at twice the rate of the previous Tory administration. During its last nine years in office, under Margaret Thatcher and John Major, fewer than 500 new crimes reached the statute book via primary legislation.

And the rate at which offences are being created is accelerating the longer that Tony Blair remains in Downing Street. In 1998, Labour's first full year in power, 160 new offences passed into legislation, rising to 346 in 2000 and 527 in 2005.

Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman, who uncovered the figures, said: "Nothing can justify the step change in the number of criminal offences invented by this Government. This provides a devastating insight into the real legacy of nine years of New Labour government - a frenzied approach to law-making, thousands of new offences, an illiberal belief in heavy-handed regulation, an obsession with controlling the minutiae of everyday life.

"The result? A country less free than before, and a marked erosion of the trust which should exist between the Government and the governed."

He said ministers had failed to grasp the simple truth that "weighing down the statute book" with new laws was "no substitute for good government".

Many offences are uncontroversial and will have widespread support, such as tougher penalties for selling contaminated food or against violent crime. But the Government has still managed to produce a surreal list of new offences.

It is now illegal to sell grey squirrels, impersonate a traffic warden or offer Air Traffic Control services without a licence. Creating a nuclear explosion was outlawed in 1998.

Householders who fail to nominate a neighbour to turn off their alarm while they are away from home can be breaking the law. And it is an offence for a ship's captain to be carrying grain unless he has a copy of the International Grain Code on board.

The Home Office, which has produced 60 Bills over a hyperactive nine-year period, is responsible for 430 of the new offences.

The flood of Bills compares with one criminal justice Bill per decade for much of the 20th century and has brought pleas for a period of calm from the department.

Terry Grange, Chief Constable of Dyfed-Powys, has accused the past two home secretaries, Charles Clarke and John Reid, of making policies "on the hoof" in response to media pressure over serious crime problems, foreign offenders and the immigration service.

Lord Ramsbotham, the former chief inspector of prisons, has urged Tony Blair to "shut up" for the sake of stability in the criminal system.

Almost every other part of Whitehall has also found things to outlaw. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has brought in 640 new offences, the vast majority through secondary legislation. The Department for Trade and Industry has produced another 592, and the Foreign Office and the Office for the Deputy Prime Minister 277 each.

Each addition swells the enormous number of offences already on the statute book, some dating back to medieval times. Even the Attorney General's office said it had no idea how many existed. A spokeswoman said: "There are thousands and thousands."

Downing Street argued last night that much of the legislation it had inherited needed to be updated. A spokesman said: "Crime has fallen by 35 per cent since Labour came to power precisely because we have given the police and criminal justice system the modern laws they have asked for to tackle crime effectively.

"Among the offences we've modernised are new laws to tackle sex offences, domestic violence, antisocial behaviour and knife and gun crime. Are the Liberal Democrats saying these were a mistake?"

Mr Blair has made clear that he favours an extension of summary justice, and fresh proposals are expected in the autumn.

The Association of Chief Police Officers disclosed yesterday that it was considering asking ministers for powers of instant justice, including the authority to exclude unruly youngsters from town centres and to break up teenage gangs.

Condemning the idea, David Davis, the shadow Home Secretary, said: "We cannot bypass the court system. It is up to the justice system to scrutinise and take judicial decisions, not the police."

Shami Chakrabarti, the director of human rights group Liberty, said the figures demonstrated that politicians were becoming "addicted to law making". She said: "The next time the cry goes up to legislate our way out of a crisis, a deep breath from the Home Office might just be more inspiring than further statutory graffiti."

Enver Solomon, deputy director of the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies at King's College London, said: "It has become a New Labour trademark to criminalise a range of social harms which would be more effectively dealt with away from the clutches of the criminal justice agencies."

[infowarsnews] Claim: Liquid Terror Suspect Watched Conspiracy Vids

Claim: Liquid Terror Suspect Watched Conspiracy Vids
Disturbing growing trend of 'guilt by association' should concern 9/11 truthers

Paul Joseph Watson/Prison Planet.com | August 15 2006

We are starting to notice a disturbing and growing trend whereby truth activists are being linked with terror suspects in a ploy of guilt by association that echoes back to the days when the Patriot movement was linked with Timothy McVeigh by the Clinton administration after the Oklahoma City Bombing.

In a London Guardian article written by a friend of one of the suspects rounded up last week, it is claimed that the individual, Waheed Zaman, was skeptical of the official explanation behind the 7/7 and 9/11 attacks.

"After 9/11 and 7/7 Waheed was sceptical about whether Muslims could have been responsible. He watched conspiracy videos on the internet. He believed them and thought they made sense. Like most people in the world, he was anti-war. But his solution was: fight the enemies of Islam by showing them the real Islam, a religion of peace."

Throughout the article, Kamran Siddique describes his friend as a well respected member of the community, liked by all races and interested only in studying to become a doctor and Liverpool football club. The suggestion that he would be involved in terrorist plots in completely alien to his described beliefs and character.

Whether the media or the government will jump upon this facet and use it to attack peaceful researchers and truth seekers remains to be seen. However, one example of where it has already been tried was CNN's Christiane Amanpour comments last week, in which she discussed people who believe "conspiracy theories" about terror attacks in the same context as the liquid bomb terror suspects.

Because we live in a police state where innocent people are set-up, raided and framed by the government - and because hate crime and 'glorification of terror' legislation has been introduced in both the US and the UK - it is necessary to emphasize the fact that Paul Joseph Watson, Steve Watson and Alex Jones as well as any person connected with Alex Jones Productions completely abhor and denounce violence of any kind against innocent people.

Furthermore, we also maintain our right under God-given freedom of speech to question the nature and source of terrorism without being smeared or labeled as suspicious.

This is in print and archived for posterity. If they try to associate us with any of these suspect individuals then it just proves in triplicate everything we've been saying about staged terror alerts and false flag provocations.

[infowarsnews] Former British Ambassador Says Terror Alert Is "Propaganda"

Former British Ambassador Says Terror Alert Is "Propaganda"
Indians says group linked to liquid bombers controlled by Pakistan's ISI

Paul Joseph Watson/Prison Planet.com | August 16 2006

Former British Ambassador to Uzbekistan Craig Murray says the alleged transatlantic liquid bomb plot is staged-managed propaganda on behalf of Bush and Blair - who yearn for a "new 9/11" to absolve them of domestic political trouble.

Murray previously blew the whistle on how the British government was using evidence obtained from torture in Uzbekistan - inflicted on its population US-funded regime of Islam Karimov - the dictator who likes to boil people alive.

Murray questions the intent and capability of the alleged terrorists to carry out the attack and offers the likelihood that evidence of the plot was obtained through torture in Pakistan.

"None of the alleged terrorists had made a bomb. None had bought a plane ticket. Many did not even have passports, which given the efficiency of the UK Passport Agency would mean they couldn't be a plane bomber for quite some time," says Murray (pictured).

"In the absence of bombs and airline tickets, and in many cases passports, it could be pretty difficult to convince a jury beyond reasonable doubt that individuals intended to go through with suicide bombings, whatever rash stuff they may have bragged in internet chat rooms."

"Then an interrogation in Pakistan revealed the details of this amazing plot to blow up multiple planes - which, rather extraordinarily, had not turned up in a year of surveillance. Of course, the interrogators of the Pakistani dictator have their ways of making people sing like canaries. As I witnessed in Uzbekistan, you can get the most extraordinary information this way. Trouble is it always tends to give the interrogators all they might want, and more, in a desperate effort to stop or avert torture. What it doesn't give is the truth."

Murray describes the alert as "more propaganda than plot," and points out that of all the Muslim terror suspects who have been charged, 80% have been acquitted and only 2% have ever been convicted on offenses related to terrorism.

Meanwhile, Delhi police in India claim they have concrete evidence that proves collusion between Pakistani intelligence service ISI and the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in carrying out militant attacks in India.

One of the alleged mastermind's of the liquid bomb plot, Rashid Rauf, is a member of Lashkar-e-Taiba. The ISI is a CIA front and the CIA have privately ignored their control of terror groups while publicly lauding Pakistan's status as an ally in the war on terror.

On Monday night it emerged that elements of MI5 wanted the liquid bomb plot to proceed and make the arrests only after the attack had taken place - sacrificing an estimated 3,000 lives and ensuring Britain experienced its own 9/11.

[infowarsnews] What Does A Terrorist Preparing To Bomb 10 Airliners Do Beforehand? Buys Cakes

What Does A Terrorist Preparing To Bomb 10 Airliners Do Beforehand? Buys Cakes
Behavior of liquid bomb suspects mirrors 7/7 patsies - no evidence of terror planning

Paul Joseph Watson/Prison Planet.com | August 16 2006

The characters and behavior of the few known liquid bomb suspects are completely inconsistent with any notion that they were preparing to kill themselves in acts of mass terror - mirroring the pre-attack demeanor of the 7/7 patsies.

A CCTV image (top) shows one of the suspects, Tayib Rauf, entering a bulk order supermarket in Birmingham just two hours before anti-terror police swooped in to grab him for his alleged role in a plot to bomb ten transatlantic airliners. What were the tools of terror Rauf was acquiring before his kamikaze death mission? Knives? Peroxide to make the deadly liquid bomb? Cameras to detonate the bombs?

No - he was buying cakes.

"Does this look like the kind of person planning such a plot? He doesn't look like he's about to blow himself up," the owner of the store told the London Mirror.

Rauf chatted with the owner, who said he was more concerned about his father's confectionary business than the fact that he was about to aid in the mid-air slaughter of 3,000 people.

Any two-bit psychologist can tell you that this individual's behavior completely belies the notion that his life is about to come to an end. That in itself exposes the alleged plot for the monumental fraud it is.

Again we hear the same story over and over - they had young families, they were not political, they were active members of the community, everyone liked them whatever race, they loved football, they planned to be doctors, they had future prospects.

Is this an inside joke? MI5 can't even find some angry Muslim loners with criminal records to at least make it appear as if they would have any motive to carry out these attacks? It's such a blatant ruse you wonder if they are doing it on purpose to send a message - that everyone should live in fear of a dawn raid from the terror cops.

The evidence that the London bombers knew they were about to die was so flimsy that newspapers and even the London Metropolitan Police concluded that they were unwitting dupes.

"A Metropolitan Police counter terrorist expert told a seminar that the four terrorists - Mohammad Sidique Khan, 30, Shehzad Tanweer, 22, Germaine Lindsay, 19, and Hasib Hussain, 18, - did not fit the preconceived terrorist profile."

The bombers purchased return tickets, played cricket, ate Big Macs, and had arguments with members of the public in the hours before the attacks took place. They left no suicide notes.

"I've seen the CCTV footage of these people. They do not appear to be on their way to commit any crime at all. The Russell Square bomber [Hasib Hussain] is actually seen going into shops and bumping into people [prior to his attack]," the expert said.

The bombers were described by friends as as four "nice lads", "normal kids who played basketball and kicked a ball around."

A week after the liquid bomb alert and we still have no motive and no evidence that suggests these individuals are anything other than unfortunate fall guys for Blair's latest act of psychological warfare against the British people.

But it's a battle of information that is increasingly swinging away from baseless fearmongering and in favor of the truth. BBC and British newspaper website forums have been swamped with people expressing their incredulousness about the reality of the latest so-called threat.

A London Guardian journalist in an article today highlights how he traveled the country and found widespread skepticism about the real nature of the alert amongst British citizens - with only tourists wholeheartedly trusting the government.

Assertions that the alert is nothing more than political propaganda have also been echoed by commentators and journalists themselves as well as the former British Ambassador to Uzbekistan Craig Murray.

[Cognoscence] RED ALERT: 9/11 Investigator Assaulted by Police

Renowned American Free Press investigative reporter, Christopher Bollyn’s home in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, was raided by undercover police late last night. He was attacked with Tasers, physically assaulted right in front of his wife and 2 small children, and arrested on trumped-up charges. The reason? His research into the 9/11 cover-up and his most recent article: Israelis Hold Keys to NSA and U.S. Government Computers (see below). Chris sent me the following report at 2:00 AM this morning...I urge you to support him in any and every way you can...

9/11 INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALIST HARASSED AND BEATEN AT HIS HOME BY UNDERCOVER COPS

It's after 2 a.m. in the morning, my deadline is tomorrow, and I have been beaten up by the local police and my right elbow is sorely hurting, but I need to write down exactly what happened to me today before I go to sleep. Otherwise I will forget important details.

I was harassed, beaten, and shocked with a Tazer-like gun in my front yard before my wife and children, and then abused for 6 hours by the ADL-trained local police. I have every reason to believe it is because of my journalistic investigation into 9/11. I have been threatened before in my career as a journalist, but this is the first time I have been intentionally beaten and abused – by the cops.

I have investigated 9/11 since it happened and looked into the many unanswered questions of the terror attacks. I discovered last year that I had had at least two FBI informants crawling around my house for years. This is the main reason I do not feel safe in the United States. It is also why I spend much of the time in Europe or at safe houses in this country, with fellow 9/11 researchers like Ellen Mariani and Eric Hufschmid. I have two small children.

I have only been at my old home in Hoffman Estates for a couple of weeks, mainly because my road-weary children dearly love this old red house, which is the only home they have ever known. It is just a simple Hoffman-Rosner suburban Chicago tract home that my late parents bought in 1957, but it's home.

I had noticed an unusual amount of police activity around my house since I returned. We live on a quiet side street where one might normally see a police cruiser once or twice a week. Since I returned I have noticed all kinds of police cars and devices in the immediate proximity of my house.

But yesterday there was something very unusual around my house. It was an unmarked car with three armed men with body armor driving around my block as I rode my bike to the store. Who in the heck is that? I thought to myself. It looks like they are going to my house, but I won't be there, I thought.

Then today, the same time and the same car with three men passed slowly by my house where the neighborhood kids were playing. "Hello, FBI," I said from my porch and waved.

The man in the front passenger seat waved back. I immediately alerted my wife and kids. Helje said I should stop them and ask them what they want.

For background, today I was working on two rather big stories and I made a lot of phone calls to the Embassy of Israel, the S.E.C., the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and to an old Israeli living in New York who I have suspicions may be a key player in 9/11. I'd like to discuss this lead but I can't at this point.

All of my calls were about 9/11 related, except for the calls to the Embassy and local consulate of Israel. These were standard journalistic inquiries about Israel casualties and losses in Lebanon. The Embassy press department didn't like my questions, but I told them it's my job. I wanted to know about the number of dead and wounded and if 60 Merkava tanks had been taken out, as Hezbollah claims.

Then I also asked where exactly the two Israeli soldiers had been abducted. I told them that there were at least 15 newswire stories that said the soldiers had been captured in the Lebanese village of Aitaa al-Shaab – inside Lebanon. He was surprised to hear that, too.

Apart from my un-disclosable investigation, the other calls were about how Jacob "Kobi" Alexander was able to flee with more than $60 million dollars last week, several months after it was public knowledge that he and the other Israelis working with Comverse Technology, Ltd. had swindled hundred of millions through fraudulent stock options trades. This has been going on for years, and The Wall Street Journal and Globes (Israel) reported the names and the amounts last March. For crying out loud, my newspaper, American Free Press, reported it in April 2005.

I wanted to know from the SEC and the U.S. Attorney's office how this Kobi Alexander was able to wire $60 million to his account in Israel and flee New York without any body stopping him. "If I wired $5 million to Norway the whole NSA and FBI would be all over me," I said.

The U.S. Attorney's office said they "expect" Kobi will turn himself in. Note to the wise: Don't count on it.

Kobi Alexander was one of the owners and developers of Odigo software which allowed Israelis to communicate instantly on 9/11. It was via the "buddy system" on Odigo software, which allows one to communicate to a large group of people that share a trait, such as the Hebrew language, that thousands of Israelis were warned not to go to the twin towers on 9/11.

Kobi Alexander's Mossad-linked company, Comverse Technology, was a developer and owner of Odigo since early 2000, something The New York Times does not consider to be part of "All the News that's Fit to Print." Comverse makes a black box system called the "Audio Disk" that police, intelligence and security agencies, and governments around the world, have attached to their phone networks. This simple device allows the Israeli employees of Comverse back in Tel Aviv to hear and intercept all the data being exchanged by these naive agencies...everything.

Hello...?

I had finished all of my calls and watched the first part of the Lou Dobb's news program on CNN and was on my way to the store, when I stepped out on the stoop and saw this threatening dark car full of obvious agents of some sort. I immediately warned my wife and kids and rode the bike to the store.

Something is not right, I said to myself, and I stopped at the local wine shop and asked to use the phone. I called 911 and told them that a strange car with armed men is driving around my neighborhood for no apparent reason. I was told that a police car would meet me at my house in 20 minutes.

I was just in my house a few minutes when the very same suspicious car stopped in front of my house and three armor-clad men stood on my driveway. I had just been calling the police department and put down the phone. I was more than a little surprised to see these armor-clad thugs on my driveway.

My wife and 8-year old daughter were already there and I asked these men who they were and why they were harassing my street. Why are you driving around with this unmarked car around my house, I asked? Who are you, anyway? They were not at all willing to identify themselves and were very confrontational, to say the least.

I ran to my front door to call my brother when the three of them tackled me and shocked me with some sort of stun-gun. The three men then sat on me and pushed my face in the dirt, handcuffed me and put me in their car.

Remember, I had called 911 because of a suspicious car in my neighborhood, a neighborhood I have known since 1957, when my parents helped found this town.

I have two small children, after all, and this car looked very threatening to me. This is what I call my normal neighborhood obligations, but I discovered that they are actually watching us. They even joked about it at the station later. "We are watching you," they said.

It should be noted that my neighborhood does not have any crime or gangs or anything of that nature that would warrant an undercover squad to patrol around my house day after day. This is why it is so suspicious. And why are they patrolling around my house?

As they pummeled me, my wife was pleading for me and my daughter was crying. I really wanted my brother, my neighbors, and my son to come help me but before even one minute had passed there were dozens of cops and firemen in my front yard.

Where did they all come from so quickly? How were so many police in my neighborhood at the same time? This is most unusual, as Hoffman Estates is spread out all over northwest Cook County, but there were at least 5 squad cars and at least 10 officers in my front yard within one minute of my being beaten up on my lawn.

Sitting in the squad car with handcuffs on is when the private abuse began. Officer Fitzgerald indulged in offending me, my late mother, a village pioneer, and then threatened to beat me.

When another officer came to the car, he told me that this guy was going to beat the ---- out of me. When I repeated what he said word for word, he would say, "I didn't say that."

He then started to drive me to the station, which is about three miles away from the old village center where I live. Bombarded with continuous verbal abuse, when I would say something from the back-seat he would slam on the brakes so that my head hit the plexi-glass separation window. Typical Chicago cop torture treatment; rough the guy up on the way to the station. This is exactly the kind of thing that I ran against when I ran for mayor of this town in 2001.

I decided to lean back on the seat and not say another word.

When we got to the station, there was a host of white-gloved cops waiting for me in the police garage. When Officer Fitzgerald drove in to the garage, he told the 10-12 waiting cops: "He says cops are a bunch of ……….. You can take care of him now."

When they took me out, I informed them that I am a journalist and will write about their treatment. The verbal abuse now came from all sides. They told me I should get out of town, etc. I told them that my dear parents had founded Hoffman Estates, but they didn't care.

When I was in the station they forcibly stripped off my belt and tore of my shirt leaving me clad only in shorts and undershirt. I asked why I was being detained and they told me that I had resisted arrest and threatened the police with my fists, two complete lies.

I was never the subject of any arrest. I had called to police to report a suspicious vehicle driving around my home!

I was thrown into a cell with no water. I asked for a drink of water and was told, "Drink from the toilet."

Why am I being treated this way, I wondered?

At midnight, an officer came to my cell and asked if I could pay $100 to get out. What I am being charged with, I asked? I called the police and they beat me up in my front yard, I protested.

What did I do to deserve that?

My older brother had posted bail and shortly after midnight, I was pushed out onto the street with a good two-mile walk home.

I am shocked at how I was treated, because although my journalism gets me into trouble with police in many places, I have never been treated so brutally in my life. I honestly believe this brutal treatment is connected to my 9/11 research.

I intend to seek asylum in Norway or Switzerland. I can read the writing on the wall.

Investigative journalists are not safe in Iraq – or the United States.

Israelis Hold Keys to NSA and U.S. Government Computers

CRITICAL U.S. GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY COMPUTER NETWORKS USING ISRAELI "SECURITY" SOFTWARE

Christopher Bollyn
American Free Press
http://www.rumormillnews.com/cgi-bin/forum.cgi?noframes;read=89717

The most critical computer and communication networks used by the U.S. government and military are secured by encryption software written by an Israeli "code breaker" tied to an Israeli state-run scientific institution.

The National Security Agency (NSA), the U.S. intelligence agency with the mandate to protect government and military computer networks and provide secure communications for all branches of the U.S. government uses security software written by an Israeli code breaker whose home office is located at the Weizmann Institute in Israel.

A Bedford, Massachusetts-based company called RSA Security, Inc. issued a press release on March 28, 2006, which revealed that the NSA would be using its security software:

"U.S. Department of Defense Agency Selects RSA Security Encryption Software" was the headline of the company's press release which announced that the National Security Agency had selected its encryption software to be used in the agency's "classified communications project."

RSA stands for the names of the founders of the company: Ronald L. Rivest, Adi Shamir, and Leonard M. Adleman. Adi Shamir, the lead theoretician, is an Israeli citizen and a professor at the Weizmann Institute, a scientific institution tied to the Israeli defense establishment.

"My main area of research is cryptography – making and breaking codes," Shamir's webpage at the Weizmann Institute says. "It is motivated by the explosive growth of computer networks and wireless communication. Without cryptographic protection, confidential information can be exposed to eavesdroppers, modified by hackers, or forged by criminals."

The NSA/Central Security Service defines itself as America’s cryptologic organization, which "coordinates, directs, and performs highly specialized activities to protect U.S. government information systems and produce foreign signals intelligence information."

The fact that the federal intelligence agency responsible for protecting the most critical computer systems and communications networks used by all branches of the U.S. government and military is using Israeli-made encryption software should come as no surprise. The RSA press release is just the icing on the cake; the keys to the most critical computer networks in the United States have long been held in Israeli hands.

AFP inquired with the NSA about its use of Israeli-made security software for classified communications projects and asked why such outsourcing was not seen as a national security threat. Why is "America’s cryptologic organization" using Israeli encryption codes?

NSA spokesman Ken White said that the agency is "researching" the matter and would respond in the coming week.

American Free Press has previously revealed that scores of "security software" companies – spawned and funded by the Mossad, the Israeli military intelligence agency – have proliferated in the United States. The "security" software products of many of these usually short-lived Israeli-run companies have been integrated into the computer products which are provided to the U.S. government by leading suppliers such as Unisys.

Unisys integrated Israeli security software, provided by the Israel-based Check Point Software Technologies and Eurekify, into its own software, so that Israeli software, written by Mossad-linked companies, now "secures" the most sensitive computers in the U.S. government and commercial sector.

The Mossad-spawned computer security firms typically have a main office based in the U.S. while their research and development is done in Israel. The Mossad start-up firms usually have short lives before they are acquired for exaggerated sums of money by a larger company, enriching their Israeli owners in the process and integrating the Israeli directors and their Mossad-produced software into the parent company.

RSA, for example, an older security software company, acquired an Israeli-run security software company, named Cyota, at the end of 2005 for $145 million.

In January 2005, Cyota, "the leading provider of online security and anti-fraud solutions for financial institutions" had announced that "security expert" Amit Yoran, had joined the company's board of directors. Prior to becoming a director at Cyota, Yoran, a 34-year old Israeli, had already been the national "Cyber Czar," having served as director of the Department of Homeland Security's National Cyber Security Division.

Yoran had been appointed "Cyber Czar" at age 32 by President George W. Bush in September 2003.

Before joining DHS, Yoran had been vice president for worldwide managed security services at Symantec. Prior to that, he had been the founder, president and CEO of Riptech, Inc., an information security management and monitoring firm, which Symantec acquired in 2002 for $145 million.

Yoran and his brother Naftali Elad Yoran are graduates of the U.S. Military Academy at Westpoint. Elad graduated in 1991 and Amit in 1993. Along with their brother Dov, the Yoran brothers are key players in the security software market. Amit has also held critical positions in the U.S. government overseeing computer security for the very systems that apparently failed on 9/11.

Before founding Riptech in 1998, Yoran directed the vulnerability-assessment program within the computer emergency response team at the US Department of Defense. Yoran previously served as an officer in the United States Air Force as the Director of Vulnerability Programs for the Department of Defense's Computer Emergency Response Team and in support of the Assistant Secretary of Defense's Office.

In June 2005, Yoran joined the board of directors of Guardium, Inc., another Mossad-spawned "provider of database security solutions" based in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Guardium is linked with Ptech, an apparent Mossad "cut out" computer security company linked with the 9/11 attacks.

Ptech, a computer software company in Quincy, Mass., was supposedly a small start-up company founded by a Lebanese Muslim and funded by a Saudi millionaire. Yet Ptech's clients included all the key federal governmental agencies, including the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Naval Air Command, Congress, the Department of Energy, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Internal Revenue Service, NATO, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Secret Service and even the White House.

The marketing manager at Ptech, Inc. when the company started in the mid-1990s, however, was not a Muslim or an Arab, but an American Jewish lawyer named Michael S. Goff who had suddenly quit his law firm for no apparent reason and joined the Arab-run start-up company.

Goff was the company's information systems manager and had single-handedly managed the company's marketing and "all procurement" of software, systems and peripherals. He also trained the employees. Goff was obviously the key person at Ptech.

In the wake of 9/11, during the Citizens' Commission hearings in New York, Indira Singh, a consultant who had worked on a Defense Advanced Research Project, pointed to Ptech and MITRE Corp. being involved in computer "interoperability issues" between the FAA and NORAD. At this time Ptech's ties to Arabs was the focus, and Goff was out of the picture.

"Ptech was with MITRE Corporation in the basement of the FAA for two years prior to 9/11," Singh said. "Their specific job is to look at interoperability issues the FAA had with NORAD and the Air Force in the case of an emergency. If anyone was in a position to know that the FAA – that there was a window of opportunity or to insert software or to change anything – it would have been Ptech along with MITRE."

The Mossad-run Guardium company is linked with Ptech through Goff Communications, the Holliston, Mass.-based public relations firm previously run by Michael S. Goff and his wife Marcia, which represents Guardium. Since being exposed in AFP in 2005, however, Michael's name no longer appears on the company website.

Photo: Amit Yoran, the Israeli "Cyber Security Czar" appointed by President George W. Bush in 2003. Yoran has held various positions since the 1990s in which he oversaw computer security for the Dept. of Defense computers.

Although he and his brother reportedly grew up in Pound Ridge, New York during the 1970s and 1980s, the heads of the Jewish community told AFP that they had never heard of him. One said that she had conducted a survey of the Jews living in the small village of Pound Ridge in the 1970s and she would have remembered if a wealthy Israeli family named Yoran had been found.

Why did the locals in Pound Ridge NOT remember the Yorans?

Probably because they were NOT in Pound Ridge - but in Israel. The Pound Ridge address was used to give the appearance that the Yorans were Americans. I spoke with Elad and he has a distinctive Israeli accent - not what you would expect for a guy who grew up in a posh Yankee village.

So who are the Yorans? Who are their parents and why did they come to the United States? To raise a couple high-level moles to infiltrate the most sensitive U.S. computer networks? How could they have lived for 20 years in Pound Ridge and NOT be remembered.

[The Guardian] Training camps for terrorists in UK parks

**I think this is an indication that it is best not to let your kids play war games in the woods with their cap firing toy guns and walkie talkies anymore...**
================================
Training camps for terrorists in UK parks

Ian Cobain and Richard Norton-Taylor
Monday August 14, 2006
The Guardian

Suspected terrorists have mounted training exercises in some of the most popular areas of the national parks of England and Wales, the Guardian has learned.

Undercover detectives have watched groups of up to 20 men, some with known terrorist connections, taking part in outdoor training in the Lake District and elsewhere. The exercises have gone on sporadically for several years, but some training camps are understood to have been run in the past 12 months.

None is believed to be related to last week's arrests for an alleged plot to blow up planes leaving Heathrow, but security sources told the Guardian that the use of training camps in remote areas of the UK was typical of terrorists seeking to build cells in this country.

The disclosures came as the home secretary, John Reid, announced early this morning that the threat to the UK posed by terrorism had been downgraded from critical to severe. A statement from the Home Office said: "This means that a terrorist attack is still highly likely. But the intelligence assessment suggests that an attack is no longer imminent." The change was made by the Joint Terrorism and Analysis Centre, the statement said.

Following the change, the ban on hand luggage on flights from the UK was lifted. The Department of Transport said in a statement that passengers would now be allowed to carry one item of hand luggage on to flights.

Twenty-three of the alleged plot suspects were still in custody last night, while Pakistani officials said there were clear links between a suspect arrested there in recent days and al-Qaida networks in Afghanistan.

The revelation of the camps is likely to raise anxiety about the number of potential terrorists in the UK, though laws introduced in April allow prosecutors to seek a life sentence for anyone convicted of the offence. Surveillance teams watching the groups in the Lake District are thought to have gathered evidence to pass on to crown prosecutors.

The Guardian knows the precise location of the camps where the group has been monitored in the Lake District, but cannot disclose it. The group, unaware it has been under surveillance, was not undergoing weapons or explosives training.

However, police believe they have clear evidence the men were preparing a mission of some sort, not enjoying a camping holiday. The surveillance is thought to have been by detectives from Scotland Yard's antiterrorism branch; security sources in London confirmed they were aware of it.

The farmer whose land was used, and who knew nothing of the men's intentions, declined to comment, while other locals said they were completely unaware of the training mission. "Frankly, I would have thought they would have stood out," said one local resident.

Shortly after the 7/7 attacks, a senior police officer said he was aware of training exercises in the UK's national parks, but appeared to withdraw his remarks.

Colin Cramphorn, chief constable of West Yorkshire, said camps would be found in the Yorkshire Dales and the western Highlands, as well as the Lakes. "They're actually pure indoctrination camps," he said in a media interview. The following day his press officer said he had been attempting merely to "make an analogy", adding: "He was not talking about camps as physical locations." As part of the inquiry into the July 7 attacks police have investigated a rafting trip to Bala in north Wales by two of the four suicide bombers made shortly before the attacks.

The former imam at Finsbury Park mosque Abu Hamza, serving seven years for inciting murder and race hate, is also alleged to have organised camps in the Brecon Beacons, south Wales.

Prisoners held at Guantánamo have also told counterterrorism officials that Abu Hamza organised exercises. The first, in 1997, are said to have been at a monastery near Tunbridge Wells, Kent, and at a farm in Kent. Next year he is said to have run an exercise in the Brecon Beacons at which two men, who claimed to be former members of British special forces units, were paid to explain how to maintain firearms, and gave counter-surveillance training.

According to the statements made by prisoners at Guantánamo, about ten of Abu Hamza's followers attended the training course. Although human rights lawyers are deeply sceptical of these statements, the allegations of camps in Wales are understood to have been corroborated by number of other prisoners.

When police raided Finsbury Park mosque in January 2003 they recovered found chemical suits, gas masks, a stun gun, knives, blank-firing handguns, maps and handheld radios.

[Telegraph] University students at centre of terror plots

University students at centre of terror plots
By Roya Nikkhah, Andrew Alderson and Julie Henry

(Filed: 13/08/2006)

The recruitment of Muslim students at British universities to take part in terrorist attacks is at the heart of the alleged plot to blow up passenger jets, it is feared.

A dossier of extremist Islamic literature has been uncovered by The Sunday Telegraph on the campus of a north London university, one of whose students has suspected links to the alleged terrorist attack.

A tape produced by al-Muhajiroun

Waheed Zaman, 22, a bio-chemistry student and the president of the Islamic Society at London Metropolitan University, was one of 24 people arrested last week. Material found at two portable buildings used by the society includes documents advocating jihad and a pamphlet on how to deal with approaches from the security services.

Prof Anthony Glees, the director of Brunel University's centre for intelligence and security studies, criticised university authorities for ignoring the threat to national security in their midst. "Institutions have not sought to address the problem: they have instead sought to undermine those who have raised the issue," he told this newspaper.

Extremist Muslim groups had been detected at more than 20 institutions, both former polytechnics and long-established universities, over the past 15 years, Prof Glees said.

Cassette tapes produced by al-Muhajiroun, the disbanded militant organisation that praised the "Magnificent 19" who carried out the September 11 2001 attacks, were also discovered at the university's portable buildings used as a prayer room and library.

Al-Muhajiroun was headed by Omar Bakri Mohammed, the radical London cleric forced into exile in Lebanon last year. The portable buildings are on land owned by the university, which also part-funds the Islamic Society.

According to security sources, "several" of the 23 people still in custody over the alleged plot last week are suspected of links to universities, appearing to confirm growing fears that campuses are providing Britain's biggest security threat.

Intelligence analysts warned Britain in the aftermath of September 11 that British Muslims of student age were being drawn to the cause of fundamentalism. Many of these men, often from middle-class families, are believed to have infiltrated British universities to recruit terrorists.

It can also be revealed that five of those arrested last week are suspected, like two of the 7/7 London bombers last year, of attending training camps in Pakistan to learn the use of explosives. According to security sources in Pakistan, some of those arrested last week had also had recorded "martyrdom messages" to be used for al-Qaeda propaganda.

Anti-terrorist detectives were continuing last night to question those arrested in London, Birmingham and High Wycombe on Thursday. Those detained, aged 17 to 35, are suspected of involvement in an alleged plot to blow up as many as 10 transatlantic airliners bound for United States cities. They are being quizzed amid growing evidence linking the alleged plotters to terrorists in Pakistan.

The authorities there have announced the arrest of two Britons, one of whom they consider a "key" suspect. Rashid Rauf, 25, the brother of Tayib Rauf, 22, one of those held in Britain, is among seven people held in Karachi and Lahore.

Under questioning in Pakistan, Rauf is alleged to have admitted meeting Matiur Rehman, a Pakistani terrorist suspect. If confirmed, it is the strongest indication yet that al-Qaeda may have been involved in the plot, which would have killed more than the 3,000 victims who died in the September 11 attacks on the US.

Police in Britain are believed to have found chemicals and other equipment for bomb-making at the home of at least one of the men arrested last week. Thames Valley police said they had seized computer equipment during raids at three internet cafés.

Although the security services in Britain are convinced that they have arrested the "main players" in the airline plot, officials in the US say that at least five suspects are still being hunted.

The family of Zaman has denied that he is involved in terrorism. There is no evidence that he put the extremist literature in the university's portable buildings.
